Instagram Strategies for 2022 with Kayla Kleinman of Kayla in the City – Podcast Transcript

Episode 61 – Instagram Strategies for 2022 with Kayla Kleinman of Kayla in the City – Pitchin’ and Sippin’

Speakers: Lexie Smith, Kayla Kleinman

Lexie Smith

You guys, I’m so excited about today’s show. I have had the privilege of working with and coaching Kayla through my second business Ready, Set Coach, and she is an absolute master of her craft. But just as much as I hope she’s learned from me, I’ve learned a whole bunch more from her and the amount of respect I have for this lady is next level. Kayla, welcome to Pitchin’ and Sippin’,  I always like to kick things off by asking where is home base, which I know but tell everyone else? And what do you like to do outside of work for fun?

Kayla Kleinman

I mean, first of all, thank you so much for having me. I’m so excited to sit here and chat with you. I feel like it’s just fun to get to talk with you. Whenever we get the opportunity on Zoom. So fun that it’s getting recorded today. I’m based in New York City. I’m in Manhattan in the village. And when I am not working, I like to have many hobbies. I’m a big reader of fiction and like I always joke that I read a lot of trash. I’m a big theater nerd. So I will see theater every opportunity that I can. And I also love flying trapeze in the summer so that’s my hobby of choice. But right now I like flying in the summer.

Lexie Smith

Flying trapeze, so casual. I just want you to get where you can do that? Is there a trapeze studio in New York?

Kayla Kleinman

So yeah, there is a trapeze school in New York City, and there’s also Streb in Brooklyn. There are multiple trapeze school locations in DC, probably other places I’m forgetting, but you would be surprised if you like to look up there are a fair amount of trapeze schools I got started because there’s trapeze at Club Med resorts. So I grew up like that was oftentimes where my family went on vacation. I just liked it, tried it on a whim and really fell in love with it. So when I moved to New York City, I got really involved and really into flying.

Lexie Smith

I just had a mouth drop. I think I’m cool because I can juggle but be able to whip out Yeah, you know, casual.

Kayla Kleinman

I can’t juggle. I go there. I can’t juggle that I don’t even have. I can’t show off my party trick. Besides, when I like what about my phone for videos, I guess videos,

Lexie Smith

now I’m gonna totally message you after this. And I want to see something. But books I know you’re a big reader. I’m a big reader. Yeah, give us some of your favorites. That’s a hard question.

Kayla Kleinman

I know I always try to think of something like what I recently read. I like staring at some of my books. Most recent book that I absolutely loved was Wish you’re Here by Jodi Picoult. It is about puppets. So it’s definitely not for everyone to read right now. So like just go in knowing that. But it is like an emotional, cathartic journey. My favorite favorite book that I yell at everyone to read is the idea of you. It sounds bad whenever I explain it, but it is like thinly veiled Harry Styles fanfiction, but it is hands down like the best romance I’ve ever read. It destroyed me. Like, I’m in a Facebook group for it. That’s how obsessed I am with it. I became a hairstylist and because of it I like that book I’m obsessed with. I have never felt passionately about a book but like, this is my book. So if you go read anything, it’s The Idea of You by Robin Lee

Lexie Smith

By Robin Lee. Okay, so I got to Barnes and Noble gift cards for Christmas. And I know you’ve mentioned that before, but now that you just mentioned it again. I’m 1,000% You sold me. So good. Good. Go read it.

Kayla Kleinman

You know, I look forward to discussing

Lexie Smith

Commission from Robin Lee for how much you hype the book. I love it. Okay, Kayla, so let’s get a little bit more into your background. You do a lot of things. But let’s rewind time and talk about your career up until today.

Kayla Kleinman

yeah so way way back when I went to college for theater, which is where my love of theater is still from. And while I was in college, I started my blog at Kayleigh in the city. I was just starting to get into fitness. I was not athletic at all growing up, but was starting to go to the gym starting to like, kind of try different foods. Like at that point in time. Almond milk was very bizarre, like no one knew what almond milk was. So it was like, Oh, this is like a new thing that I was trying and that no one was talking about. So I started my blog in college as a way to share my own fitness journey. And because I felt really alone and didn’t really know anyone else, it was like going to yoga classes or trying this new dance class at their gym. So I started that blog, which then became a social media platform as well obviously, as the years have gone on social media has become kind of an additional branch of the blogging world Instagram and Twitter. So through that blog and through my Twitter, actually I got accidentally hired by ClassPass which at that point was this teeny tiny company? They reached out to me because they saw something I tweeted out and they’re like, Hey, we have this Oh, meaning, would you be interested. So I went, I interviewed, and I got the job. And I started there on a part time basis, and then ended up working my way into being the social media manager there kind of all accidentally.

Kayla Kleinman

And just like one thing led to another. And I ended up in this social media position and using my own experience from my blog and learning first thing. So from there, I kind of stayed in that startup world, mostly going in marketing positions, and then eventually realized, like I have all this interesting experience, but I really wanted the education to back it up. So I went back to school, I went to business school to get my masters in social media, mobile marketing, I always joke that I like it sounds a lot sexier than it is because it was a lot of math and not like making Pinterest boards all day, which I think some people think it is, and I probably wished it was. But I graduated from grad school. I had always kept that love of fitness and working out so had kind of dabbled as a personal trainer, but also did my yoga teacher training before I went to grad school. So as I was in grad school, my yoga career was picking up. So I ended up really focusing on that after I graduated, which is what I was doing full time leading up to that pandemic. Obviously, the pandemic changed my industry, many industries. So I got back to that social media world and back to my roots, and had always kept a finger on the pulse with my blog and my social media channels. So realize that I could bring that knowledge and that passion to the coaching world, since I wasn’t necessarily looking to manage accounts again. But I’ve loved keeping up with the trends and like seeing where social media is heading. So it became my goal to then work one on one with small women in businesses to help them really level up their Instagram game.

Lexie Smith

Okay, so a couple things. First, I wrote this down. He said, I accidentally got hired by ClassPass. No, girl, you were doing your wish, and they saw you so credit to you. And when I lived in LA, I was obsessed with ClassPass. For anyone who’s like, what is ClassPass I’m gonna butcher this. But it’s basically Kayla, you probably could say this better, but go for it i’m gonna butcher it

Kayla Kleinman

I mean, I don’t know how they would pitch themselves now because it’s changed a lot as a brand. But essentially, it’s a membership so that you can sign up for a bunch of different fitness classes under this one membership. So instead of having a class package at your favorite spin studio, your favorite boot camp or favorite yoga studio, this one membership allows you to sign up for all of those classes. And I think one of the things that people like about it is like oftentimes it is a bit more affordable as a way to workout.

Lexie Smith

Yeah, I think it’s brilliant, actually I was just given a class pass. This podcast is not sponsored by class pass, but I just gave a class pass gift card to my sister in law over the holidays. Anyway, it was so cool that you got in the door there when they were young. You’re the only person I know who has a master’s in social media. So that’s incredible as well. And you did tee us up a little bit to what you’re doing today. So let’s talk more about what it is you do today. And what you offer.

Kayla Kleinman

Yeah, so I work one on one with mostly solopreneurs or small business owners, all wet men, although not opposed to men, but usually women who find me and vibe with me. And I’m really all about helping people show up authentically on social media. And then we all have so much knowledge and personality to offer. It’s just a matter of finding what that looks like for you. And for everyone that’s going to be different. I think there’s this fear that there is this one way to show up on social media and if that’s not you, that’s not your personality. There’s no place like this for you. But what I really love doing is helping people figure out who they are and then how they can bring that to social media while also teaching them the nitty gritty strategies of really being strategic about what you post and not just waking up being like what am I going to post today? Okay, here we go. So teaching them that teaches them also the like, literal skills if maybe they’re new to reels and they don’t know how to make something happen and they want to make it happen. So quite literally holding people’s hands like I’ve been on chats with them being like, okay, verse, you’re gonna do this, and you’re gonna do that. I’m here for all of that. That’s why I am a business, your social media BFF and I truly think of myself as like your hype girl, getting you hyped to show up on social media and helping you out if there are things that along the way you don’t know how to do. So excuse me, I work these people one on one through what I call coffee dates. So if you’ve ever been like I want to pick a social media shatta just brain this is your opportunity to pick my brain. There could be a topic that you want to talk about. It could be you just laying it on me with all these coins. I also work with people in a longer format. So kind of taking you through step by step if you really feel like I don’t even know where to start. So it really depends on where you’re at and your social media journey and kind of how I can best support you.

Lexie Smith

Beautiful. Okay, so guys, as you’re hearing, we have a true pro with us today. And I did an Instagram episode last year. But because this is such an evolving platform, we need to do a new one. Hence, I immediately thought of you were about to deep dive into Instagram land 2022. Okay, so the first question is a little blunt. But 2022? should we still be on Instagram?

Kayla Kleinman

I say absolutely, yes, I think there is still so much Instagram can offer us. And what I’m actually excited about is that Instagram is continuing to evolve and change with the trends that are going on. Like when you think about it, it really wasn’t that long ago that Instagram stories came into the mix, I want to say 2017 because I was in grad school at the time, and like doing grad school or internships, I was like, we’re gonna do Instagram stories. It’s this new thing. I don’t know what it is. It really hasn’t been that long. And that changed the game and then really changed the game again. And we don’t even necessarily know what’s going to be the next thing to change the game. So I think what’s fun about Instagram is there continue to be more ways to show up authentically, that are no longer just stuck in this perfect little grid post. And that, to me, is very freeing. And I am excited that I think Instagram will continue to kind of break out of that shell of like what it was five, six years ago, when it was this like perfectly curated place like now it’s really a place where people can show up and let people fall in love with them so that then they can follow their business. So I say Instagram is still the place to be. There’s other places to be as well. Nothing wrong with that. But I’m still passionate about what Instagram can offer business owners.

Lexie Smith

Perfect. So you said it yourself. And this is what I wanted to get into and acknowledge. Yes, it is changing so quickly. So 2022 What should we know, too, and I’m totally ripping off your program name master the gram. Right. So what are the things that are working right now? On Instagram?

Kayla Kleinman

Yeah, so reels are definitely a big part of that. Reels have this tremendous opportunity to get you in front of a lot of people. So I think that is the number one thing that if you are not starting to play a lot of reels, I highly, highly, highly recommend that you get started with them. If you are like I have no idea where to even start and like I don’t want to dance and point to things. Let’s chat, I can help you figure out how to make it work for your business. But I’m such a strong believer in the power of reels. And it has, it just has this ability to get you in front of so many new people in a way that posts don’t typically, um, I think the other thing is starting to really think about creating content that is highly shareable and either entertaining because it’s relatable, and we can all look at it and be like, Oh my god, yeah, that’s, that’s totally me. Or it’s educational, it teaches someone something that they didn’t know, and that they’re actually going to go forth and use in some way. So really, really thinking about it in that way.

Lexie Smith

Okay, so here’s my bad joke of the episode. I really avoid making reels. And I know a lot of other people drag their feet here too. And I absolutely encourage everyone listening to book a coffee date with Kayla, but high level, are there any tips you have to make this new world of reals feel like less of a burden or less of a lift?

Kayla Kleinman

Totally. I like real hot, not high level, real way I think about it. I’m real. I’m like way outside the real deal in talking about reels if I just start with this idea of what it is that I want to say. So for me, I’ll go into my business or brand and think about those core things that I talk about. And I think for many of us, we do have those things that we are constantly bringing up. Maybe it’s to clients that we work one on one with, maybe it’s when families ask us about what we do and it’s that question that we like to literally always get asked. It’s something that we’ve been like, ruminating on and coming up with. So, for example, I’m a yoga teacher as well. So something that comes up a lot for me is the fact that like, I am not flexible at all, whenever people hear I’m a yoga teacher, they’re like, man, you must be so flexible. And I’m like, No, not. And it was like a lot of imposter syndrome, for me becoming a go to yoga teacher and like, auditioning at these top Studios in New York City, knowing that, like, I can, like barely touch my toes, and like, who am I to teach these people? So if I was using that idea, it would be using the idea of you don’t need to be flexible to do yoga, and kind of stemming from there and being like, okay, that’s my like thesis statement, we want to think back to high school English class, what are some points that I can think about from there? So like, why does that not matter? Maybe it’s educating people on what yoga actually is , not just touching your toes, although that is like, could be an aspect of it. Maybe it is talking about the ways that you have other options in a pose. So like, if you’re not very flexible, and this bothers you, or it’s not right for your body, do this instead. So like, starting with that core idea, and then thinking about, like, what is the story that you want to tell about that core idea. And then I literally just think of it as like, mini movies, essentially, of like, I have this idea, resenting this idea. educate someone by giving them a couple of tips, or showing them three yoga poses, they can do instead, whatever it is, and then like, really focusing on that like offering and educating them. For me with the music. Like, I feel like you and I are the same in this that like I like to go for, for ironic, or like, wink, wink, nudge, nudge humor, and like, that’s who I am like, I am like, a cheesy person at my core.

Kayla Kleinman

So like, for a yoga video about flexibility. Not or No, like, private like, I’m thinking like Dip it Low by Christina Millian. But it would be like using Janelle Monet’s yoga, or like thinking about it, or I can also just like find whatever is popping up on reels and if it fits the video, if it’s the video, so like, really just breaking it down like that, it doesn’t need to be this elaborate duction you don’t need to have fancy transitions. You don’t need to have choreography. For me, my most viral reel to date is still like one of those I was just like in like really not cute clothes, just like presenting, just like showing my hands in front of me pointing and maybe making a face. And there’s no transitions. I was in my old apartment. So it was like not a very cute apartment for Instagram. And that video, like went way viral and got the attention of the company free forum and they reposted it and then a company reached out to me to write an article on that topic. So like, don’t feel like you have to do transitions, do these elaborate things. If that’s not you, if that doesn’t excite you, there’s still so many ways to use reels effectively.

Lexie Smith

Yeah, thank you for sharing all of that and reiterating, you know, releasing the pressure for it to have to be perfect or a blockbuster. I attended one of your workshops. I think it was called the real deal on rails again, girl after my heart here. And one thing you said during that workshop that I thought was really helpful, and I just want to share with everyone listening, Kayla was like go back through your Instagram, go through old stagnant posts, and find a post that you liked or that you did really well that was a feed post and just make that into a real I was like, oh my god, great. It’s like repurposing, literally right, you know, so whenever I do batch reels, I go back through my Instagram and then like what am I already talking about? What did people like to hear and I just made a short video of it. So.

Kayla Kleinman

Totally. And I would recommend opening up your insights and going through your static posts. So like the things that come up on your feed, and especially look up what was the most saved and the most shared and then literally recreate that as a real I’ve like taken old captions word for word like barely changing the text and turned it into a real and then it has this new life and the truth is everyone likes to digest content in different ways. Some people think back to like, some people are auditory visual or kinesthetic learners, so sometimes we need to tell them the same thing in five different ways for them to resonate so like don’t be afraid just because you’d like to say in a caption. I was like, “ I wouldn’t like to do it on back -to -back days. Like definitely let some time pass but especially if you’ve been creating newsletters, blog posts, static Instagram posts for any little while you have this like goldmine of content. So you’ve literally got to like sift through and like, find those old goodies, that then you can just recreate. And like, I’m such a big fan of repurposing content that, at the end of the day, like, there are not 1000s of things I can offer you educating you on Instagram marketing, like, I have my core principles of what it is. And yes, that’s always changing and evolving, and I can show it in new ways, but like, it’s not like every day, there’s like a brand new tip that’s coming out. But there’s this way to continue to like remakes and repurpose various ideas that are constantly coming up. And like you’d be surprised that something that did well as a static post a year ago, will potentially then do well as a real post a year later because it’s still like this juicy piece of content.

Lexie Smith

Yeah, you know, the concept of repurposing isn’t a new one. But when you connected it to reels, I had a revelation aha moment, and it’s probably the only reason that I do realize now is because I can do that. So thank you. And for anyone who likes my reels thank you Kayla. Now, the other thing you mentioned, addition, in addition to reels was shareable content, and I know you had you worked with a client, who recently went viral on another level, I mean, viral to the point where I had a miscellaneous client in Canada, send me the article about your client, no idea that I know you, you know, action there. So anyways, talk to us a little bit about that client specifically, because I think that’s a good example of the shareable content theme right now.

Kayla Kleinman

Totally. So this client is Mary Katherine Starr, who created mom life comics, the handle is mom life, underscore comics with an S at the end. And I have known her for a while. I used to listen to her podcast like eons ago, I have always maintained an online friendship with her. I’ve never met her in real life. But she’s like one of my social media friends, like I have many, many. And she had, she’s an incredible illustrator, but like, what she’s really great at is finding these ideas and turning them into these comics that are just super relatable and other about her life, or things that are universal to being a mom. So she created her own account just for these comics and as a place for them to live. And it was growing really steadily. She was doing really well and had like, hit the 10k mark in less than six months. And she launched this summer, so way less than a year so and so she launched this or made this comic about the double standards of parenting about how a mom who gets her kid fast food for dinner is considered lazy or uninvolved or like a bad influence. But yet when the dad brings home Mickey D’s he’s like the fun dad, he’s the cool dad, he’s you spontaneous, and it was just a whole series of comics. Talking about that double standard of a dad watching his kid is babysitting a mom watching her kid is just being a parent. And it really struck a nerve with people, because a lot of people could relate to feeling a double standard. And a lot of people then felt compelled, compelled to share it.

Kayla Kleinman

Because when you relate to something and you nod your head, yes, oftentimes, that’s when I know I hit the share button on my social media, because I know my audience potentially roll relate. So oftentimes, or kind of anytime that’s really what creates viral content is that shareability I found that in her case, she like latched on to this, I wouldn’t say controversial, but definitely this topic that’s like a hot button topic, I got a lot of people talking and like a lot of people, not a lot some people offended as well, which is oftentimes the nature of this kind of content. And it was getting shared getting shared gang share people were sending it to their friends, people were posting it, and then also got noticed by having to post by a cup of Joe, so it’s really just that kind of organic viral potential of just like having this idea and realizing if I’m thinking this other people are probably as well. I will say my own viral story, the real that I talked about earlier, it was about choosing not to have kids and also a like kind of controversial topic in the sense that it’s like not something really people talk about and not something that like for me as a 31 year old heterosexual cisgendered woman like I’m no one was talking to me about this and my 20s So like me coming in and like saying this, like it sparked a lot of discussion and a lot of people sharing their thoughts who did a lot of like, not a lot, some male trolls and like their own like fragility around that which I’m like, big eyeroll like thanks for the engagement.

Kayla Kleinman

But those, you don’t need to be like controversial, like, you don’t need to be like causing problems and like causing riffraff. But think about those things that maybe people aren’t talking about in your industry and for your business? And how can you bring them to the forefront? It doesn’t need to be a real American Athens case, it was a comic. So it was definitely not real and how can you like to bring that stuff to the forefront? I’m not saying it’s easy and like, oftentimes, we like to strike gold with this. One thing. And in Mary Catherine’s case, she started. This happened less than a month ago, and we’re talking she started I want to say like, maybe around the 10k range, maybe like 15k. She last time I checked, I got like, look at her right now.

Kayla Kleinman

I think she is at 141 50 151,000 followers, so she has spiked by over 100k In the last two weeks because of this post. This is definitely an extreme case, like, she is definitely like, not a unicorn, but like a really amazing success story. But what we can learn from her is really thinking about our content in that way. Not every piece of content needs to be relatable, shareable, or entertaining. But how can we really integrate that kind of content into our strategy, so that we like have that potential to, to go viral and get in front of new people and like, spread the word honestly, like, for me with the choice not to have kids at the end of the day, the most amazing part of that was how many people reached out to me and said, Thank you, like thank you for sharing your story. I felt so alone in my own journey, figuring this out as well.

Lexie Smith

There’s so many aspects of this story that I love. And I want to recap and just point out a couple of things to listeners first, Kayla with your own viral story. That is an example of you using Instagram and eventually segwaying its way into the traditional press, and Instagram really led to press Mary Katherine and Instagram post or comic not only led to her, you know, audience reach like quadruple billion whatever the math on that is. But it also led to press and it was that Huffington Post article that a client sent to me because she was super inspired and then wanted to replicate something in her own niche, which is completely opposite to that extent. So really, really cool examples of how to generate traditional press on a more new form of media as well. The last thing I want to talk about before we wrap up with something new you and I were talking about last week, and I know you do not have all the details on this. And honestly, by the time this area’s perhaps we will not but you hinted at something coming with Instagram, a foreshadowing of algorithm change that I am really grateful to have on my radar, even though we don’t know all the details. So I’d like to put that on people’s radars in case it’s still not out there yet. Can you tell me what you do know about what’s coming on Instagram?

Kayla Kleinman

Yes, so like you said, I’m not some Instagram Insider. All this is public knowledge. I think he’s like the head of Instagram, Adam. Oh, I’m gonna butcher his last name like Masuri. If you Google search around, you’ll find that he gets a lot of Instagram updates. So he was mentioning that Instagram is developing a three feed Instagram feed. So one of them is going to be people you follow. I might be misremembering this, but one of them is going to be I think favorites so you can isolate certain people. And then I think once again don’t quote me on this because I read this article A little while ago, it is going to be kind of like a tick tock version of a feed that you are getting like other people that are recommended to you.

Kayla Kleinman

Once again, don’t quote me on this because it’s been a while since I read the article, but this like three feet system is being talked about being rolled out that is definitely not like a rumor. He did actually say it. I don’t know what the time is. It’s possible in some countries, they might already be getting a soft launch because sometimes Instagram will slowly roll things out to certain demographics and certain areas. So it’s interesting, it’s gonna be another thing to adjust to on Instagram and like, rethink in the same way that like when Instagram stories came out, we had to rethink our Instagram strategy. When reels came out we had to rethink our strategy. So like, it’s always that like, ma here we got something new. Um, but to me, I’m always hopeful that it’s an exciting change and will continue to allow us to get in front of new people, especially if one of those is kind of that tick tock esque place to get in front of new people. So I know I’m like, curious about what it’s going to look like, I do not have insider information. I wish I did. Instagram, you want to like, give me the goods, let me know. But as always, with social media and entrepreneurship in general, we just have to constantly be reiterating and looking at what’s working, looking at what’s not working, and rolling with the punches in the same way fitness studios had to do that when we all got shut down. So like, I think it’s just a part of the entrepreneurship game. So like, we can choose to be annoyed with it, or we can just be excited about it and like, find a way to make it work for us.

Lexie Smith

Yeah, and thank you, I’m sorry to put you on the spot. And I won’t quote you on anything, but I think it is helpful to know that I’m thinking of Game of Thrones, right now Winter’s coming or another change is coming just so you can even let out your annoyance now. One of the first to keep an eye out on that. So that when it does come whether you’re someone who does your own social media, or you hire an agency or you are an agency, it’s on your radar and if you need help working, working through it when it does come out, then again, I highly suggest pushing you back towards Kayla and her coffee date. We’ll talk in a second here about where people can get in touch with you. First, the most serious question of the show. Kayla, I need to know what we can find you sippin so what is your favorite beverage alcoholic or non alcoholic?

Kayla Kleinman

Um, I will say too I’m like I have like my water glass next to me like I’m like I saw this TikTok or reel that was about like being emotional support water bottle and like I’m that girl like I my friends know like I always always always have water on me. I can’t use cute purses because I have to have a water bottle on me. It’s like part anxiety, part hydration. So like bless up I am a well hydrated person. Besides water. I love iced coffee with vanilla and oat milk or soy. I’m not too picky on the option but like I am that person that like yesterday at definitive studio TeeJet they’re making fun of me they’re like it’s freezing outside and yet there you are like drinking your iced coffee. And I was like an iced latte and I was like yep, I like that iced coffee. You can just chug it on down and you’re ready to go.

Lexie Smith

So I learned a lot today but I also learned about an ESWB, an emotional support water bottle.

Kayla Kleinman

There’s great content on it. That’s and it’s relatable because then I shared it because I was like oh my god it’s me I feel seen

Lexie Smith

And so do I. So both of those accounts are wonderful to follow. They’re super helpful. Kayla will put all the links in the show notes. This was so much fun as it always is with you. I’m really excited to read your ideas. I really am going to buy that. You are so good.

Kayla Kleinman

Good to read it, Emily. Yeah, Emily read it and I made everyone read it. That’s my goal. I’m excited.

If any of you listeners read it, send me a DM. DM Yeah, let us know. And with that said I’m gonna let you get back to your busy day and thank you so much for pitching and sipping with us and cheers.
